Snoqualmie Valley Virtual Academy
What is the Snoqualmie Valley Virtual Academy?
Snoqualmie Valley School District offers an online education option for high school students. The Snoqualmie Valley Virtual Academy (SVVA) has partnered with Aventa Learning to offer a fully-accredited program that allows students to take high school classes online and graduate with a Mount Si High School diploma.
The Virtual Academy is designed for high school students who are interested in taking up to six classes online per semester, part time or full time. Thre is no tuition cost for students to take up to six classes per semester. Some courses do require specific materials that are not provided - please see the list.
Credit recovery options are available for $75 per semester class ($125 per semester class beginning 8/30/11).
Credit Enhancement options are also available for $275 per semester class above six classes. This involves a student taking more than six classes online, on-campus at Mount Si/Two River and/or through the Running Start program at a local community college.
Why should I consider taking classes from the Snoqualmie Valley Virtual Academy?
- Flexible Schedule: Learn when it’s convenient for you. Begin your studies--anytime, anywhere.
- Maximize Your Time and Set Your Own Pace: Each semester course is designed to take 90 hours of coursework, and you can progress faster or slower as your ambitions and learning needs dictate. No more scrambling to catch up with the rest of the class or feeling frustrated because you were ready to move forward. Full-time students can expect to spend about 25 hours per week on course work.
- Get help when you need it: Your Aventa online teacher is available during the day (generally 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM or later) by phone or email to help you be successful.
How do I get started?
-
Current Mount Si students can make an appointment with their counselor to complete a referral form and select courses. Appointments can be made by contacting the Counseling Office secretary at 425-831-8150, or your counselor directly (by student's last name): A-E, Mr. Galagan; F-L, Mrs. Easthope; M-Ro, Mr. Tilton; and Rp-Z, Ms. Maimon.
- Current Two Rivers students can make an appointment with Mr. Athanases to complete a referral form.
- Students new to the district can pick up and complete new student enrollment paperwork in the Mount Si Counseling Center and then make an appointment with a counselor to complete the referral form. Transfer students coming from other alternative learning environments (home school, alternative school, and/or online) will need to meet with the Mount Si High School principal if they will be taking any Mount Si classes in addition to Virtual Academy classes.
-
Upon meeting with your counselor and completing the referral form, contact SVVA Coordinator, Lisa Truemper, to schedule an online learning orientation meeting.
Who may enroll in full-time online learning?
Any self-motivated high school student may enroll in online learning. (Middle school options are coming in the future.) Organization and time-management are just two of the essential skills necessary for this independent learning environment. The others can be found in the Online Learning Inventory Assessment which you will be asked to complete as a part of the enrollment process to assess your motivations and strengths towards becoming a successful online learner.
How does it work?
Aventa Learning provides accredited curriculum, qualified teachers and instruction for online students. Many students find success taking just one or two online classes at a time. Once approved, students can be enrolled for two more courses and repeat this pattern throughout the year. Completing six full credits a year (12 classes) will allow a student to earn a high school diploma in four years, provided they work with their online teachers and local mentor and adhere to the following responsibilities outlined in the SVVA Online Learning Agreement.
- Login daily and make acceptable progress toward course completion. This means completing an agreed upon percentage of each course every week to stay on track or make progress as determined by the written student learning plan.
- Communicate once a week at a minimum by phone or email with the online learning coordinator. An in-person conference will be required if the student is not making acceptable progress or has a login lapse of more than three days —that has not been pre-arranged.
- Schedule time with the online learning coordinator to come in and take one unit test and the final assessment for each course. Transportation to Mount Si High School for testing or conferencing is the student’s responsibility.
- Acquire extra curriculum related materials. Some Advanced Placement and science courses require additional materials not provided by the Snoqualmie Valley School District. Click here for a list of course materials and fees.
- Pass required state assessments, including CBAs, CBPAs, HSPE, and mathematics course-end exams. Satisfactory completion of all Snoqualmie Valley School District credit requirements, including the High School and Beyond Plan and Culminating Project, and any additional state requirements, will earn online students a Mount Si High School diploma as well as allow participation in the commencement ceremony if desired.
